On a cold, clear Saturday we drove up to the high mountains of Saint Catherine for a day that was half history and half mountain, and all of it memorable.
Saint Catherine's Monastery
We began at the foot of the mountain, at a monastery built in the sixth century and still lived in today. Inside its walls stand a church and a small Fatimid-era mosque side by side, and it is hard not to feel something standing between them.
Up Mount Musa
Our Bedouin guides led the climb, telling the old stories of the mountain as the rocks turned red, yellow and ochre around us. Near the top we stopped for a Bedouin lunch with views that stretch across the whole of South Sinai.
The way down
As the sun dropped, the mountains glowed gold and the descent turned quiet. We got back to Dahab tired, cold and very happy.
