Two days in the mountains of Saint Catherine: a walk through the Bedouin orchards, the calmest camp we have ever slept in, and a jump into the Blue Galt.
Breakfast from the trees
The first day was about 10 km of walking, and we hardly needed the snacks in our bags. The valleys around Saint Catherine are full of Bedouin gardens, and the trees along the way gave us everything for free: pomegranates, zaaroor, figs, grapes. Then our guide handed us something none of us had ever tasted. The Bedouins call it safargal. It became the fruit of the trip.
The calmest camp
After about 10 km of beautiful scenery we reached our camping spot, and it was the most peaceful place we have ever stopped for the night. Cushions and small mattresses on the ground, nothing to hear but the mountains, and our Bedouin guides cooking a mouthwatering barbecue dinner. One of those nights you don't want to end.
The Blue Galt
Day two was a long walk, with our camel carrying the luggage so we could walk light. And then there it was: the Blue Galt, a pool of cool water hidden in the rock, exactly like in the photos and videos. Off with the clothes and straight in. After two days on the trail, that first jump was fabulous.
