This guide covers what the day looks like, how hard the hike is, when to go and what to bring. It is written by the team that runs the trip every month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The short version<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Summit height:<\/strong> 2,285 m (Jebel Musa, the Mountain of Moses)<\/li><li><strong>Distance from Dahab:<\/strong> about 133 km, roughly 2 hours by road<\/li><li><strong>Hike:<\/strong> up the Camel Path, down the 3,750 Steps of Repentance<\/li><li><strong>Our day:<\/strong> leave Dahab at 8:00, back between 6 and 8 pm depending on the season<\/li><li><strong>Best months:<\/strong> March to May and September to November<\/li><li><strong>Bring:<\/strong> passport, sun protection, good shoes and warm layers<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Saint Catherine&#8217;s Monastery<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The monastery sits at the foot of the mountain and was built in the 6th century under the Byzantine emperor Justinian. It is one of the oldest working Christian monasteries in the world, and the wider Saint Catherine Area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed in 2002).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside the walls you can see the Burning Bush, the Basilica of the Transfiguration with its icons and mosaics, and the museum of icons and manuscripts. The famous library is mostly closed to visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The monastery opens to visitors in the morning only and closes on Sundays and Orthodox holidays; Friday hours are limited. In 2025 it also closed at short notice for a period during a legal dispute over its land. That is why we only run this trip on the monastery&#8217;s working days and times, so the visit is never skipped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Dress code:<\/strong> shoulders and knees covered, for both men and women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The hike: Camel Path up, Steps of Repentance down<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are two ways to the top, and we use both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Camel Path<\/strong> was built in the 1800s and climbs in long, steady switchbacks. It is the gentler way up, about 7 km. Near the top it joins the steps, and the final 750 steps have to be walked by everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Steps of Repentance<\/strong> were cut into the rock by monks, traditionally around 3,750 of them. They are steep and uneven, so going down takes care and steady knees, but they are the most beautiful part of the mountain: a narrow gorge, Elijah&#8217;s Hollow with its old cypress tree, and the monastery appearing far below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the summit there is a small chapel, a mosque and the cave where tradition says Moses waited. On a clear day you see a sea of granite peaks in every direction, including Mount Catherine, Egypt&#8217;s highest mountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How hard is it?<\/strong> Moderate. You need to be comfortable walking for several hours with a long climb. You do not need hiking experience, but you do need to be ready for the steps on the way down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why we hike in the day, not for sunrise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most Sinai trips leave Dahab around 10 pm and climb in the dark for sunrise, with hundreds of people on the same path. We go in the daytime instead. You see the mountain you are climbing, the path is quiet, you eat lunch at the top, and you visit the monastery during its opening hours rather than waiting outside in the cold. And you sleep in your own bed the night before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What makes our trip different<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walking on Mount Sinai is only allowed with a local Bedouin guide from the Jebeliya tribe, who have lived around the monastery for centuries. On our trip you also have an English-speaking guide who explains the monastery, the story of Moses&#8217; journey and the Ten Commandments as you go, so the places you walk through make sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Included:<\/strong> transport from Dahab, all tickets and permits, the Bedouin guide, the English-speaking guide, and lunch on top of the mountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Weather and the best time to go<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saint Catherine town sits at about 1,586 m, and the summit is much colder than Dahab. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best seasons. In July and August the days are hot. From December to February the nights drop below freezing and the summit can see snow, so warm layers are essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even in good weather, it gets cold quickly around sunset on the way down. Always pack an extra layer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to bring<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Your passport (there are checkpoints on the road)<\/li><li>Sun protection: hat, sunglasses, sunscreen<\/li><li>Comfortable hiking shoes with good grip for the steps<\/li><li>Extra warm layers for the summit and the evening<\/li><li>Water and a small backpack<\/li><li>Clothes that cover shoulders and knees for the monastery<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A note on the changes in Saint Catherine<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Egypt is building a large tourism project in Saint Catherine (often called the Great Transfiguration project), with new visitor facilities and hotels. Some areas around the town may look different from older photos, and local arrangements can change.
